How to Replace an audi replacement keys G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, ivimall.com I experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, and/or an unfire when in the gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and programming audi Key requires to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find especially in the case of an Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your car. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins.
